Colors of Spring: Green

Elizabeth Beal

Greetings, green!

Spring’s truest sign, green tells us that things are finally turning over; leaves uncurling in miniature on all those previously-bare branches.

The most tender (and tasty) bites of the season signal their arrival with a little shoot of green: Peas and radish tops, or brave asparagus stalks creeping up from the dark ground. The eyes of your littlest one open wide in wonder at what their green garden is growing.

Take a moment to just sit and be in the green grass. Maybe you’ll find your lucky clover.

Your help needed to find owner of dog involved in Orangevale attack

The family of a three-legged Jack Russell terrier that was mauled to death by a Rottweiler is asking the public for help.

Ziggy was repeatedly bitten by a Rottweiler that was not on a leash at Pecan Park in Orangevale Wednesday. The owner's son, who was walking Ziggy, was also bitten several times on his hands as he tried to push the attacking dog away.

On Wednesday night Ziggy died from his massive internal injuries. The family of Ziggy's owner is asking for the public's help to identify the Rottweiler's owner.

The Rottweiler's owner, who was driving a pickup with Oregon license plates, agreed to follow the young man to the vet but then drove away.

"We don't want this to happen to anybody else," said Val Akana, the daughter of Ziggy's owner. "It's not right. It's not the law. You need to keep your dog on a leash and control them. And if you can't, keep them home."

Child hit by car in front of Gallardo Elementary in Folsom

SACRAMENTO – A child was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car in front of a Folsom elementary school Tuesday morning.

Folsom Police Sergeant Jason Browning said the vehicle hit the child outside Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary School around 8:09 a.m.

Medical response arrived at the scene and transported the child to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Browning said.

Browning did not indicate how the child was struck or whether the driver would face any charges.
