White Rock Park Grand Opening Brings Out Community

The Cordova Recreation and Park District celebrated the grand reopening of White Rock Community Park on Saturday, much to the delight of the surrounding neighborhood.  Thousands of residents flocked to the park to celebrate the complete renovation of the park, in the works for seven years.  The residents enjoyed live music, games, crafts, bouncers, a giant slide, free piggy bank and beach balls compliments of Cordova Recreation and Park District, free barbecue, tours of the new building, and took time to meet District staff and local dignitaries.  Most popular of all, this day marked the inaugural run of the park’s free splash park, a 4,000 square foot behemoth that includes a huge dumping bucket, slides, spray jets, and more.  The splash park is the largest free public splash park in Sacramento County, perhaps even in Northern California.

My Summer as a Bully

My Summer as a Bully

I was never bully material. I was the youngest in my family so I never had any one to practice bullying on. Plus, I always carried around a lot of guilt so it was hard for me to be cruel to someone for my own personal satisfaction. Like so many stupid things I have said, I have kept a vivid memory of my hurtful words and actions and have been tormented with a fantasy that someday I could actually apologize to those who I intentionally hurt.

Yet, as twelve year old, there was one summer when I got to pick on someone weaker than me and feel somewhat superior. In a rare event of family unity, it was decided that my two nephews and I would get to go to Junior Life Guard Camp at Folsom Lake.  We did daily runs, long swims, learned how to sail and perform CPR over a 4 week period. Some how a car pool was organized in the neighborhood, so my nephews and I got to take a long hot ride out to the lake with other kids we did not know.

One of kids was Chris.

Nursing Necklaces - The Modern Solution to an Old Dilemma

Nursing Necklaces - The Modern Solution to an Old Dilemma

Babies become distracted after the first pangs of hunger have been satisfied.  So they stop eating, pull away from the nipple, and begin playing with anything within their reach.  This can be Mom's hair, an earring, a necklace, clothing, in other words, if they can reach it, they will pull on it or play with it.

Developmentally, this is an important time.  The baby is exploring her world; learning how to focus the eyes, using the sense of touch to discover all the wonders around.  While very cute, it is hard on the hair, jewelry - well, you get the point.
