Water-Wise Gardening: Make the Most of Every Drop

Water-Wise Gardening: Make the Most of Every Drop

Amber Pollei

Whether you’re caring for a container garden or keeping a homestead vegetable plot alive, using water efficiently and mindfully is important. In many places, water restrictions are common — especially during the summers. But even if your area isn’t experiencing drought, follow these simple steps to conserve one of our most precious resources.

Collect water inside the house

In our house, half-full glasses of water either get added to the dog’s water bowl or dumped on a parched houseplant. And on those days when I forget my water bottle in the hot car, I empty it on a plant. Even cleaning old, glacier-like ice from the icemaker is an opportunity to water the garden. On a bigger scale, keep a bucket in your shower to collect water for your plants. Let it catch precious drops as the water warms up, and even while you shower (provided you use eco-friendly, biodegradable bath products)... Read More

How to Landscape Day - June 23

How to Landscape Day - June 23

It's that time again! The popular annual event presented by San Juan Water District and the City of Folsom is back and better than ever.

Attendees will be treated to the latest information in water efficient and environmentally friendly landscape design from some of the region’s top landscape experts. Speakers from local garden supply stores, nurseries and University of California Integrated Pest Management program will lend their expertise in water saving plants, pest control and organic growing. Cheryl Buckwater, an expert in eco-friendly landscape design, will share her tips for creating and maintaining a water smart garden at 12:30 p.m.

Outdoor irrigation accounts for almost half of residential water use, reaching as high as 70 percent in the summer. With this year’s reduced snowpack and Folsom Lake water level projections, we all need to cut back on water use.

My Neighbor Needed a Rolling Grill Table

My Neighbor Needed a Rolling Grill Table

Rolling Grill Table

My friend, neighbor, professor, author David (pictured) needed a large rolling grill table to support his frequent efforts at great grilling.  He showed me plans for one from This Old House magazine so we got the shopping list together and headed off to Big Blue for supplies.  A couple of days later with  luck and forced design changes the final product came to be.   You can get the plans at:  http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/how-to/intro/0,,20691643,00.html

I

It is a straightforward project but the plans leave a lot to the imagination and calculator. Pay attention to squareness and levelness.

Estimated Cost:

About $100.  Wheels alone were $20 and cedar was $50 so it adds up quickly.

West Elm inspired bed frame

West Elm inspired bed frame

This project was very easy to follow. I modified the measuremnts to build a queen bed frame instead. I got a little bit confused at some point and ended up with the sides overlapping the head and foot, but it's still looked pretty good, I wish I had payed attention to this detail though.

The wood I used was poplar, finished twice with wipe-on poly, one coat of minwax cherry stain and protective wax for the final finish (sanding with 220 grit paper between coats).

Built From These Plans:  Free DIY Furniture Plans to Build a West Elm Inspired Chunky Leg King Bed Frame Estimated Cost:

$150 Includes all the wood, stain and hardware.

Length of Time:

One weekend

Modifications:

If you want to build a queen bed instead just cut the head and foot at 61 1/2" and the sides at 80"... Read More
