REPRESA, CA - Corrections officials say 13 inmates were injured in a riot Wednesday at California State Prison, Sacramento (CSPS), informally known as new Folsom State Prison.
Prison spokesman Lt. Tony Quinn said, without warning, between 60 and 70 prisoners began fighting in the general population's maximum security B yard.
Several inmates were stabbed. Others received more superficial slashes, according to officials.
A correctional officer fired a warning shot and then a second shot which struck an inmate in the hip, Quinn said. That inmate had surgery and was expected to recover, said Quinn later in the day.
Prisoners were ordered to lie down, but some got up and continued fighting, Quinn said.
Of the 13 taken to area hospitals, as of late Wednesday afternoon, four had been treated and released to be transported back to the prison.
No staff were hurt, according to California Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections representative Terry Thornton.
Sacramento Metro Fire District and Folsom Fire Department paramedics responded to the incident which was first reported at 11:17 p.m.
Unit B at the prison was on lockdown until further notice.
CSPC is located at 100 Prison Road. It is a maximum security prison that houses 2,658 inmates, according to Thornton.
